A FIRST LESSON IN ART
Casein
12 x 17 inches
Private Collection
Published: February '04 issue of The Artist's Magazine

In 2003 the artist was invited to serve as a juror for the first National Casein Competition sponsored by Jack Richeson whose company owns the Shiva line of casein paints. Upon being approached by Mr. Richeson to be part of an upcoming article on casein, the artist had to inform him that he had never used casein paints. Given a five week time frame and an overnight delivery of a box of casein paints the artist created his first casein painting. “I have always loved collecting memorabilia having to do with art. Here an antique sketch box, a collection of crayon boxes and an ink well with some brushes served as a subject for my first venture using casein. The fact that the sketch box was inscribed with the phrase “A First Lesson In Art” coupled with the fact that I was using casein for the first time made the caption the obvious choice for the title. To top it off, Mr. Richeson liked the painting so much he bought it for his collection.”
