“This split oak basket, a souvenir of my sister’s from a childhood family vacation in Maine, graces the front entryway to my home, the same home owned by my grandparents. A stand of white pine trees to the east bore these fragrant pine cones which my children gathered just as I had in my youth. The fading evening sunlight entering the open doorway reminded me not only of my grandparents and vacations of the distant past but also of the hope that our family tradition of collecting will be passed on from our children to theirs.”
